Why Me? Why Now?

As many of you may know, shopping sustainably is good. It’s good for the environment and people always tell you to do it but does anyone really know why? And if you do know why you may still be thinking that you're just one person. Your little carbon footprint won’t make that big of an impact on the environment at all, right? Wrong, because if one person starts it could impact everyone else’s decision around them to start. By having the power to speak and write about whatever we want, we are each given a platform for change. So why wouldn’t you want to use that platform to actually make a difference? You may not want to stand in front of a crowd and speak about sustainability but by making the change to shop sustainably in your own life, the people around you will notice. Whether they notice your actions and deliberately change, or they naturally adapt to your ways of shopping, you are making a difference. This difference could change not only your life but the lives of those in the future. Your future children and grandchildren will live a happier and healthier life all because you made the choice to shop from different places that think about the environment.

Another common misconception that I am here to prove wrong is that shopping sustainably is difficult and expensive – also wrong. Many companies have begun focusing on lowering their carbon footprint and making their products better for the environment.  Companies like Adidas, H&M, and Zara have an entire section on their website dedicated to their sustainability statement. They clarify that they have not always been sustainable but now is the time to start. From a public relations standpoint, it gives companies a negative image to not address sustainability as it may give them a poor reputation for not caring about the environment. Clothing companies around the world have stepped up and started the process of sustainable clothing production and you would be surprised to see that some of your favorite clothing websites already have a sustainability statement of their own. So, this is not me telling you that you need to find a bunch of new expensive places to shop. I am simply encouraging you to keep an eye out for a company’s sustainability statement to assure that the clothing you are purchasing is creating a cleaner environment for the future.
